Esquimalt Lagoon, Victoria BC

Another rainy day was not enough to deter a wonderful walk at Esquimalt Lagoon. A very unique area indeed with the beautiful Strait of Juan de Fuca on one side, a bird sanctuary on the other. A single road separates the two distinctly different waterways. Raingear, a camera, a good pair of boots and a relaxed sense of self make for an adventure full of treasures! The walk is an easy one, to be enjoyed by all who care to take some time out and just explore the shore.

The strait side highlights a countless collection of driftwood and stones of all shapes and colourations. The tide will fill your boots right quickly if you are caught mesmerized by the shells, stones or story-laden logs that constantly peak your interest.(Learned that from personal experience!)

The Lagoon side features a bird sanctuary that is a haven for numerous waterfowl of the west coast. (For a complete list of inhabitants of the sanctuary, please see link below.) Just sitting quietly on a log along the shore is the best way to observe the birds. The occasional dog who is out walking its owner causes brief chaos, chasing everything in sight along the shoreline!

There are many other sights to see as you look around the area. Royal Roads University overlooks the Lagoon; the center piece of course is Hately Castle. The Fisgard Lighthouse keeps our forces safe, directing the Navy out to the ocean from CFB Esquimalt. Fort Rodd Hill Historical Site is another great locale to explore while in the area!

Whether you spend a few minutes or a few hours at the Esquimalt Lagoon, it will definitely leave a lasting impression with you; your spirit revived and your life that much richer.
